about

“O’Neill’s songs evoke a feeling of twilight and that moment of reflection before night falls is there to embrace in songs such as Push Against The Sun, the weaving, open-tuned guitars embracing the lyrics that were inspired by Justin Cronin’s post–apocalyptic book, The Passage.”
“It's about two people who stay up all night by a fire, and they’ve both fallen for each other,” O’Neill explains. “They're both kind of feeling each other out, to see if something will happen... two people who don't want the night to end, basically.”

The song was written by Gareth O’Neill in Perth, Australia on the gold mine where he lives and works half of his life. The song coalesced around some acoustic guitar licks which were combined to form the skeleton of the song. The lyrics were then written to match the mood of the music.
Guitars and vocals were recorded at O’Neill’s home studio in Perth then passed to Jake Perrett who recorded the drums remotely. The recording was rounded out with bass guitar by Tim Donaldson.

lyrics

Remember when, we were nothing but friends
Trading jokes, as the sun descends
Looking back, was it too early to tell?
Fight the dawn
Push against the sun
The night has won
If we push against the sun
Better days, before the world decayed
Mesa greys, as the shadows betray
Looking back was it too early to tell?
Fight the dawn
Push against the sun
The night has won
If we push against the sun
Won’t you fight against the dawn?
Won’t you push against the sun?
You know the night has won against the sun

about

Strakerbarlow Perth, Australia

Perth WA-based singer/songwriter striving to get his songs out into the world. The sound is ethereal at times but of flesh and blood and drawing influence from the Rolling Stones, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and a melange of ‘60s UK folk.
“I think quite visually. I really enjoy arranging my music so it sounds like it could be in a film, evoking something sinister and atmospheric.”
